Article Summary
I'm going to make this short and simple. This article is about how social networking can effect students applying for college. Admissions officers can check an applicant's social networking and see what they have posted on them. This can effect the applicants chances for getting into college by what they post or how they type. People can make fake accounts to help or hurt other applicants, making things unfair. Some applicants figure out that there are admissions officers watching them, and strategize how to avoid them.
Surprising Things
To be completely honest, I didn't even know that administrators could monitor your social networks. I don't do any social networks currently, but for anyone who does, this could be a critical thing in applying for college. I never knew that this could be so important, especially since most people have or had at least one social network.
Confusing Things
I didn't understand what the senior going to East Lansing High School, named Megan Heck, meant when she said "If you've got stuff online you don't want colleges to see, deleting it is kind of like joining two more clubs senior year to list on your application to try to make you seem more like the person they want at their schools." I don't understand what she meant with the phrase "joining two more clubs."
Applied to Me
I don't do any social networks anymore, but if I ever go back, I know that I need to be more careful posting things. You can't delete something off the internet once you have sent it, even if you delete it, people can still remember and know that. Weather it be hurtful or just something that you shouldn't post on a social network, you need to think before you post a video, or comment on a post, or make a post about yourself. This could effect you in the long run.
